Educational Technology Tool #1: Kahoot

Kahoot is a game based learning platform that educators can use to help support self-directed learning.  As an educator, you can prepare your own questions to help students gain additional learning and understanding on specific topics.  In order to gain fluency skills, which is the ultimate goal in a variety of areas, Kahoot offers flexibility, accuracy, efficiency and strategies.  


Educational Technology Tool #2: IXL

IXL learning is a fun interactive online program that helps boost confidences and fluency in subjects such as Math, Language arts, Science, and Social studies.  The games are aligned with Common Core Standards.  Students can work independently, at their own pace and receive positive immediate feedback while engaging students.  It is user friendly and geared towards certain age and grade levels.

Assistive Technology #1: Live Captain

One really great tool that can be used to assist students when using technology is Live Captain.  Live captain can be easily turned on in the settings section under accessibility then Live Captain.  This options prints the words in English at the bottom of the screen.  It can be greatly beneficial to EL learners, those who are deaf or hard of hearing, or learners who can use the added benefit of listening and following along at the same time.   I have included a link with step by step instructions on how to turn on live captain on chrome books and through Google.  Live captain meets student needs for helping those students who struggle with reading and comprehension on any text.  By removing or assisting the reading barrier, students can enhance their learning by staying on task with the class and keep them from falling behind.  It also can enhance their reading and comprehension skills. Programs like this can help students provide options for those who have exceptionalities with writing as well.  This assistive technology can also assist with students who struggle from auditory problems, or any similar issues by reading along with what they are hearing to add addition support in their learning and understanding.

Assistive Technology #2: Otter.ai

Otter.AI is a good assistive technology tool in the sense that it provides speech-to-text services.  It can be used to accommodate students who have auditory processing disorders, hearing loss at any level, or memory issues.  When using assistive technology such as speech-to-text it opens up possibilities and opportunities for students to take notes that may have difficulty writing or taking real-time notes in class.  Using the students school email will provide the basic serves for Otter.AI for free.
